Omagh Wheelers
Omagh Wheelers Cycling Club was formed back in 1999 when a number of cycling enthusiasts came together with the ambition of promoting the sport of cycling in the Omagh and surrounding area.
Mickey Gallen was the first ever chairman of the club. He was supported by Seamus Keenan as club secretary and other enthusiastic committee members such as Margaret Curran, Laura McAleer, Mickey McElduff, Terry McCabe, Philip Caldwell and Leo McKenna. Mickey Gallen also introduced Gallen Vehicle Hire as the club’s main sponsor for several years and he remains a stalwart of the club to the present day.
From the outset Omagh Wheelers has always aimed to promote a healthy balance of both touring and racing events and has consistently promoted around 25 official events in each year since its inception.
The Club’s flagship racing event is the McCann Cup, normally held in April. This event, sponsored by Hugh McCann Building and Maintenance Contractor has consistently boasted an entry of over 100 cyclists from all over Ulster.
The toughest of the touring events is without doubt the 100 mile century challenge held in July, with many of the area’s surrounding hills and scenic views being taken in on route.
In 2008 the club introduced a new style kit with Sallys night club becoming the club’s main sponsor with further support once again from Gallen Vehicle Hire and also from Caldwell Motor Factors.
Omagh Wheelers is greatly indebted to all those who have unselfishly volunteered their time and efforts over the years and to the many sponsors for their kind support. Together they have enabled the club to become one of the largest in Ulster and have made a significant contribution to the strong cycling culture that has now taken hold in the local area
